Chickfila

There has been a significant protest concerning remarks made by the CEO of Chick-fil-A in a recent speech.  This past weekend Christine Quinn a New York City Council member wrote a letter to the president of New York University.  Here’s the first paragraph of her letter,

I write as the speaker of the NYC Council and on behalf of my family.  NYC is a place where we celebrate diversity. We do not believe in denigrating others.  We revel in the diversity of all our citizens and families.

That’s a good opening paragraph and I agree that we should endeavor not to discriminate in any way.  Her next paragraph went on to say,

As you know from recent press coverage, the President of Chick-fil-A continues to make statements and support causes that are clear messages of extreme intolerance and homophobia and a belief that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Americans are less than others and deserve to be treated as such.

I was surprised that he would make statements of “extreme intolerance” so I was wondering, “What did he say?”  He said “we support the traditional family”.  He didn’t criticize any groups he simply stated his preference in support of the traditional family and Ms Quinn views this as “extreme intolerance”.

If Ms. Quinn wants NYC to be “a place where we celebrate diversity” shouldn’t she “revel in the diversity of all our citizens and families” – even those who believe in the traditional family?  If Ms. Quinn is looking for those who are intolerant she doesn’t need to look any further than in the mirror.
