Show me how you spend your time and your money and that’s a pretty good indicator of your priorities. What advice does King Solomon who was one of the wisest men who ever lived offer? “The beginning of wisdom is: acquire wisdom; and with all your acquiring, get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). Solomon realized the importance of wisdom and encouraged his readers to acquire wisdom as well.
I am someone who enjoys learning. Just as an automobile needs gasoline our minds need a regular intake of new ideas. Oliver Wendell Holmes said it well, “Man’s mind once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimension.” It’s not always easy but I love to have my mind stretched. Perhaps its rationalization for my penchant for buying books and attending conferences but I find that learning invigorates me. Maybe it’s because I have so much to learn. I agree with Harry Truman, "Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers." If you’re a leader then make reading and acquiring wisdom a priority!
