Psalm_19_10As you contemplate various investment strategies, gold is quite attractive.  It doesn’t have the volatility of the stock market and it is a currency that has worldwide recognition.  The Psalmist tells us about a treasure that is even better than gold; it is a treasure that is available to all of us — it is God’s word.

In Verses 1-6 of Psalm 19 the author explains the works of God as evidenced in creation.  Starting in Verse 7 he extols the benefits of the word of God:

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.  The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.  (Psalm 19:7-9)

What incredible benefits from God’s word!

Are you feeling down?  It restores your soul!

Are you unsure of what to do?  It gives you wisdom!

Are you sad?  It gives you joy!

The words of God are so important the Psalmist says,

They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.  (Psalm 19:10)

How are you caring for God’s treasure?  For example, what would you do if I told you I had placed several gold nuggets in your yard?  Would you immediately go outside and diligently search for the treasure?  In the Bible you have something more valuable than gold!  Are you diligently searching God’s word?

Perhaps you don’t realize your need for God’s word — please do not neglect what is really important in life.  The priorities of the world are often contrary with the priorities of God.  When the Titanic was sinking the people had a sudden change of priorities; money, gold, and jewelry were left on the tables.  Instead people took water, oranges, and items they knew were essential to life.  The prophet Jeremiah exclaimed,

Thy words were found and I ate them, and Thy words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I have been called by Thy name, O Lord God of hosts. (Jeremiah 15:16)

Finally, the Psalmist enumerates the results of keeping God’s word,

Moreover, by them Thy servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.  Who can discern his errors?  Acquit me of hidden faults.  Also keep back Thy servant from presumptuous sins; let them not rule over me; then I shall be blameless, and I shall be acquitted of great transgression.  (Psalm 19:11-13)

The word that is used for “blameless” also means to be complete.  Do you desire to be complete, to be made whole?  Do you want something better than gold?  Invest by living in God’s word.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.  (Psalm 19:14)
