What do you picture Jesus doing right now? The writer of Hebrews gives us a fascinating insight into His present ministry. The Old Testament priesthood was a shadow of the reality to come:

Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; (Hebrews 10:11)

The superiority of the priesthood of Jesus is revealed as He was a priest according to the order of Melchizedek:

who has become a priest not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. (Hebrews 7:16)

Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant resulting in our salvation:

Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)

We must realize that whatever circumstances we may encounter, that God is able to provide His unlimited power. The phrase save forever has the connotation to save completely. The word save conveys the idea to save, preserve from harm, or rescue.

The saved ones are those who come to God through Jesus. Believers have the privilege of direct access to God the Father through Jesus our Great High Priest. The phrase come to Him is in the present tense that emphasizes not only our continual activity, but also the ongoing access we have to God through Jesus. The concept of drawing near to God is a common theme in the book of Hebrews.

In what ways are you drawing near to God? Don’t miss the truth of this verse. Have you experienced the peace and joy of knowing that someone is praying for you? Several years ago I saw someone that I had not seen for over a year. As we greeted one another, he said to me, “Rick, I pray for you every day.” I was honored, humbled, and overwhelmed by his act of love toward me. Consider the truth that Jesus is interceding on behalf of those who are coming to Him.

How is this possible? Jesus is able to save us, because He did not save Himself. He took our guilt upon Himself and assumed our punishment so that divine justice was accomplished and the wrath of God was turned away. Jesus was the perfect and final sacrifice as the author of Hebrews concludes:

For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens; who has no daily need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because He did this once for all time when He offered up Himself. (Hebrews 7:26-27)

Don’t miss the wonderful blessings of drawing near to God and He will draw near to you.
