The dose makes the poison.
Paracelsus

The actual quote is “All things are poison and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.” (Original in German: ‘Alle Ding sind Gift und nichts ohn’ Gift; allein die Dosis macht, das ein Ding kein Gift ist.) As a sidenote, Paracelsus was born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheimborn. Paracelsus is known as the “father” of toxicology. His father was a chemist and Paracelsus also pioneered the use of chemicals and minerals and was a precursor to the use of vitamins and minerals to maintain health.

Perhaps he was thinking of the Apostles Paul’s advice to the Corinthians as he made the above statement:

All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12)
