Jeanne and I along with our sons went kayaking this past week along the marsh area in Mount Pleasant.  It was a great time exploring the maze of waterways through the marsh.  What would we see around the next bend – an alligator, a great blue heron, maybe pirate’s treasure?  Do we have the same eager anticipation as we go through life?

As I counsel with people who struggle with anxiety I find that they often want to know the future.  It seems the fear of the unknown can overshadow our sense of exploration and excitement of life.  One of the problems of knowing the future is we would miss the sense of exploration and discovering new horizons.  Our desire for safety and comfort can cause us to be control freaks.  We want to know all of the details of life so we can be in charge but God doesn’t work like that.  God reveals to us our ultimate destiny which is either heaven or hell based upon our relationship to Jesus but He doesn’t specify the details of everyday life.  One of my mentors said ”As we respond to the light we’ve been given then God gives us more light.”

The good news is that God wants to lead us.  David reflects upon God in Psalm 23 “He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”  Here’s the great truth – I don’t need to know what’s around the bend as long as I know the one who is leading me.  Are you following the one who not only knows your future but He cares about your future?

Are you concerned about the future?  Rest in Him and He will lead you through the unknown maze of life.  May the words of David from Psalm 143:8 encourage your heart “Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; for I trust in You; teach me the way in which I should walk; for to You I lift up my soul.”
