Jesus paid a debt He did not owe because we owed a debt we could not pay.

Jesus is the perfect, spotless, lamb of God who came to take away our sins (John 1:29). Until you realize that you are unable to pay the debt for your sin, you will not come to God for salvation from your sin. When you comprehend the seriousness of your sin, you will understand your inability to overcome your sin and realize your need for a Saviour.

and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. (1 Peter 2:24)
