Do you see the handiwork of God in your life? God has revealed Himself to mankind, but many people have suppressed God’s truth:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. (Romans 1:18-19)
You may ask, “How has God made it evident to them?”
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)
God has revealed Himself through natural revelation. Everyday as we look at nature, God is preaching a sermon to us. Whether we look through a telescope or a microscope, God’s creation can leave us awestruck. God’s works are continually displayed before us if we have eyes to see. George Washington Carver wisely observed, “I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.”
We experience not only perceptual awe as we look at God’s creation, but God enables us to experience conceptual awe as look at the mysteries in His word. This is the message of Psalm 19 as the Psalmist rejoiced in God’s natural revelation:
The heavens tell of the glory of God; and their expanse declares the work of His hands. (Psalm 19:1)
The Psalmist also expressed a sense of awe as he beheld God’s special revelation through His word:
The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. (Psalm 19:7)
Are you experiencing a sense of awe as you read God’s precious and magnificent promises in His word? As you respond to the light of God’s natural revelation, He then reveals more light to you through His special revelation, His word. That is why Paul writes that those who reject God are without excuse.
Immanuel Kant also experienced a sense of God’s perceptual and conceptual awe, “Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe, the more often and the more intensely the mind of thought is drawn to them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.” Conversely, if we fail to acknowledge God, He will give us over to our own desires:
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened. (Romans 1:21)
Take some time to reflect upon the majesty of God in nature and the amazing truths in His word. You will discover that as you open your eyes and grow in the knowledge of God that your sense of wonder and awe will deepen as well.
