I’m leaving tomorrow for Germany – I find travel an enriching experience, especially international travel. We can get so caught up in our way of doing things that we forget about the rest of the world. Sociologists call this phenomenon ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to evaluate other cultures according to the standards and values of our culture, often with the conviction that our culture is superior to the other culture.
I’ve been to Germany several times and it’s a joy to visit (although I prefer the weather in the summer). It’s efficient and clean, I love the German people, and the trains are always on time! I’ll be teaching a one week intensive course and renewing some friendships with some colleagues in Germany. It was probably during my time in the navy that I developed a love for travel and learning about new cultures. I’m thankful for the opportunity to grow, to make new friends, and to overcome my cultural myopia. What are some of your favorite countries that you’ve visited?
Tschuss!
