Who are the teachers who have had a profound influence in your life? The Gospels indicate that one of the most common titles for Jesus was teacher. His followers referred to Him as a teacher almost fifty times and Jesus affirmed this title,

You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. (John 13:13)

Jesus revealed the significance of the teacher and student relationship,

A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. (Luke 6:40)

Jesus pointed out that a pupil is not above his teacher. The word “pupil” is the word that is often translated “disciple” and it denotes a learner or an apprentice. A student’s development correlates to the capacity of the teacher. You need someone who has the capacity to lead you beyond your current ability. Who is your teacher? Teachers cannot lead pupils beyond their own ability.

This verse is a double admonition for us. We must not only seek out the best teachers for our growth, but we must also realize our responsibility as being a teacher for others. We cannot lead others where we ourselves have not been. The context for this verse alluded to the Pharisees, whom Jesus referred to as blind guides of the blind. We must rightly judge ourselves or we may be blind guides to others. Jesus challenged us to examine ourselves. If we are blind to spiritual truth, then how can we help others grow spiritually?

The Pharisees were characterized by spiritual pride. They did not acknowledge their sinful attitudes and need for God’s grace. You must realize that you will become like your teachers – either positively or negatively depending upon your teacher. Your influence likewise has a profound influence upon those who are following you. That is why Paul told Timothy to be an example of godliness,

Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. (1 Timothy 4:12)

The concept of being fully trained conveys the idea to restore, equip, or make complete. The goal of a teacher of spiritual truth is to shape the will of a student through the content of what is taught. Henry Adams reminds us, “A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influence stops.”

One who has been fully trained will be like his teacher. This is not simply thinking like one’s teacher, but being like one’s teacher. This includes the totality of one’s being. You must realize that Jesus is not only your teacher, but He is also Lord and Savior, and He places within you His Spirit that enables you to carry out His teachings.

Who are your teachers? Are you learning from Jesus? You will be like Him to the degree that He is your teacher and that you are following Him.
