Steven Furtick describes how he was challenged by Jesus’ amazing statement in John 14:12,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.”

As he pondered that statement he knew that we were meant for more and yet so many people settle for less than greater works.  He writes, “We’re frustrated about where we are.  But we’re confused about how to move forward” (p. 6).  This is his working definition of greater:

“Greater = the life-altering understanding that God is ready to accomplish a kind of greatness in your life that is entirely out of human reach.  Beyond Steve Jobs.  Beyond what you see in yourself on your best day.  But exactly what God has seen in you all along.”

Using the backdrop of the life of Elisha, Furtick reveals how God did extraordinary work through an otherwise ordinary person.  His treatment of the life of Elisha is not an exegetical study but rather an inspiring examination revealing how God wants to work in a life that is committed to following Him. Furtick does a good job identifying principles and applying them to everyday life.  Here is a sample:

Igniting God’s vision starts with becoming more acutely aware of God’s presence in your life (p. 29).

Then one day the ordinary is interrupted by a calling.  That calling can change everything, if you discern it (p. 32).

Some people never get greater because they’re not willing to leave good behind (p. 46).

One, we don’t think big enough.  Two, we don’t start small enough (p. 55).

Only God can send the rain.  But He expects you to dig the ditches.  (p. 66)

But your box is never going to expand to accommodate the dreams outside of it until you learn to trust God in it.  (p. 86)

Your greatest limitation is God’s greatest opportunity.  (p. 89)

Most of us give up too soon on the greater life God has for us.  (p. 117)

If you sense God has greater works for you then you will find this book a helpful resource.
