It’s not about you

Romans 3.24The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans reveals that all mankind is guilty of sin.  After his graphic description of the pervasiveness of sin, a stark contrast emerges in chapter 3 like a bright ray of sunshine through a dark and cloudy sky,

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,  (Romans 3:21)

We may find it easy to gloss over those first two words But now.  Despite the fact that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, Paul sets forth the truth that we are justified by faith in Christ,

being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; (Romans 3:24)

This may be a difficult concept for us to accept.  First, we resent the fact that we’re sinners in need of a Savior.  Secondly, we want to be in control and do something to atone for our sins.  We don’t want to be humiliated by the truth that we are hell-deserving sinners and that we need to accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.  We often default to relying upon our efforts rather than trust in Christ for our righteousness.  What are you trusting in for your righteousness?

You must realize that you can’t do anything to earn your salvation.  One of the greatest truths you can learn is that you are poor (the word Jesus used means utterly destitute) in spirit.   God will do nothing for you as long as you think you are sufficient in your own strength.  You are called to be righteous but it must be God’s righteousness and not yours,

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.  (Matthew 5:6)

As long as you believe that you are self sufficient, your pride will prevent the grace of God to flow into your life.

But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  (James 4:6)

It is only when you demonstrate true humility that you can receive His grace.  In what ways are you trusting in your ability and missing the grace of God in your life?  Paul summarizes his argument by saying it’s not about you but it’s believing in Christ’s finished work.

Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.  (Romans 3:27-28)
