Have you ever felt inadequate for a task? Moses probably felt that way when God appeared to him in the desert. Moses was presented with a God-sized task. The Lord saw the affliction of His people and Moses was God’s man to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians and bring them into a land flowing with milk and honey.
Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt. (Exodus 3:10)
Moses was eighty years old – he tried to help his people forty years ago and it did not go well. Moses fled to Egypt and now he is on the backside of the desert taking care of sheep. Moses was probably wondering, “Where were you forty years ago? Why would God choose me now?”
But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11)
Moses initial response was to look at himself and consider his abilities or lack of them for this task. It’s worth noting that God doesn’t answer Moses question. Moses qualifications were not the issue. What is your response when you’re faced with a God-sized task? The key is not who we are but having a proper understanding of God. God promised His presence – that He would be with Moses. Moses came to realize the significance of God’s presence later on in his ministry,
Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. (Exodus 33:15)
Moses however, did not have a complete understanding of God at this time,
Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” (Exodus 3:13)
God graciously responded to Moses,
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14)
“I am Who I am” signifies that God is self-existent and that He has no dependence upon any other being. Because He is self-existent He is all-sufficient and has no other needs. God is eternal and unchangeable, He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Moses would come to learn that God is faithful and true to all his promises and completely reliable.
What is your view of God? Too often we consider our abilities (or lack of them) and lose our confidence. When we have a proper understanding of God, then our challenges suddenly do not appear so big because we know that our God is bigger than any challenge that we face. What is a God-sized challenge you’re facing? The question is not who you are but who God is – the great I AM!
