“Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” This thought by Goethe is worth considering as we enter the New Year. As we hang up the new calendar we have a tabula rasa, a fresh start filled with hope and expectation. Take some time this week and consider, “What are those things that matter most?” Now here is the hard part, “What are those things that matter least?” The things that matter least may be enjoyable things – even good things. Those things that are good in life have a way of crowding out what is best in life. What advice does Jesus give us? “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). When we put God first, He’ll take care of the peripheral issues. Do I trust Him to take care of the peripheral issues of my life?
What are some practices that you find helpful to enable you not to sacrifice those “things which matter most” for those “things which matter least?”

Hey Rick!I’m happy to have found your blog and look forward to reading your reflections. You make a good point, and a timely one for me! I think one thing that helps is to set aside regular time for reflection, considering what – out of all the things demanding one’s attention – has the Lord required? I recently read that the Lord always gives us the grace needed for the tasks he has given us to do. Which is a good reminder that when things feel overwhelming, it may be time to try and discern whether all the things I’ve committed to are really from him.Hope you are well!
