Jeanne and I watched highlights from the Royal Wedding Friday evening, reports indicate over 2 billion people tuned in to the event. It’s amazing that approximately one third of the world’s population watched this wedding. Perhaps the Royal Wedding was a helpful diversion from the difficulties we face in this world – from natural disasters, economic uncertainty, wars, and rumors of wars. The wedding was a fairy tale picture that hopes and dreams can come true. It was an elegant event with the right balance of pomp and dignity from the ceremony in Westminster Abbey to the carriage ride to Buckingham Palace. It was a near perfect event with the exception of the hats worn by some of the attendees who looked like they wandered in from “Alice in Wonderland.”
There is a sense in all of us that desires the life we read about when we were children, “… and they lived happily ever after.” We look at royalty and wistfully think if only that were me. But do you understand your true identity? Paul writes to the Galatians, “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise” (Gal 3:29). What comes to your mind when you see the word “heir” – an inheritance? My motto is “Where there’s a will I want to be in one!”
Paul goes on and emphasizes our true identity, “Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God” (Gal 4:7). You are a child of God – talk about royalty! As you face the challenges of life don’t lose sight of your true identity and resources. You have a great inheritance – not perishable things where moth and rust destroy or where thieves break in and steal but a spiritual inheritance with riches untold. The church as the bride of Christ is being prepared for a Royal Wedding that will be the greatest wedding of all history – and you get to participate in it! Now that’s cause for celebration!
