Have you experienced the delight of disillusionment?  Disillusionment basically means to be free of illusions.  The dictionary defines illusions as „something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.”  Jesus realized the delight of disillusionment as he interacted with people early on in His ministry.

Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.  (John 2:23)

A cursory reading of this verse leads one to believe that these people were really on His team – they were His strong supporters.  Look carefully at Jesus‘ response in the next two verses,

But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.  (John 2:24-25)

These people believed in Jesus because of the great works He was doing (He had just supplied wine at a wedding – of course they were enthusiatic about following Him).  Jesus did not put His confidence in man because His confidence was in God.  He had no false illusions about the loyalty of those people.

Are you holding onto any illusions that may cause you disappointment?  As I listen to the lyrics of many popular songs I’m concerned that we’re expecting others to fulfill a role that was meant only for God.  Oswald Chambers trenchantly observes,

There is only one Being who can completely satisfy to the absolute depth of the hurting human heart, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord is so obviously uncompromising with regard to every human relationship because He knows that every relationship that is not based on faithfulness to Himself will end in disaster.

He also writes,

Refusing to be disillusioned is the cause of much of the suffering of human life. And this is how that suffering happens— if we love someone, but do not love God, we demand total perfection and righteousness from that person, and when we do not get it we become cruel and vindictive; yet we are demanding of a human being something which he or she cannot possibly give.

May you experience the delight of disillusionment – not being cynical toward others but realizing that absolute perfection is found only in God and as you delight yourself in the LORD that He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).
