We must work together if we are to accomplish great things. One of the wisest men of the Old Testament, Solomon, made this statement,
And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
You were made for community. God in His infinite wisdom said,
“It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)
As Three Dog Night reminds us, “One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.” There is an African proverbs that says, “If you want to travel fast, go alone. If you want to travel far, go together.” You can go through life fast and alone, but it’s better to go the distance and experience it with someone special.
Solomon reminds us that a cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. The three strands are woven together to provide strength but if the cord is untwisted then the separate strands are easily broken. The key is to remain together. The emphasis is on unity but it does not demand uniformity. Augustine teaches us, “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.”
You were not meant to live in isolation, you were created to do life together. People grow spiritually when they are connected relationally. Who is walking with you through life?
