Think about a time when you’ve felt weary. General Patton commented, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.” When we’re feeling weary and fatigued it seems like no one understands our situation. John 4:6 reveals an amazing insight into the person of Jesus,
and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Does it surprise you that the Son of God, the Savior of the world became weary? Jesus was 100% God and 100% man -theologians refer to this concept as the hypostatic union. Jesus was fully God and fully man, Jesus became weary just as you may grow weary. How do you respond when you grow weary? The writer of the book of Hebrews provides helpful insight to us,
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:14-15)
The word “sympathize” (συμπαθέω – sympatheō) literally means “to suffer with another (sun, ‘with,’ pascho, ‘to suffer’). Jesus knows and understands what you’re going through. There may be times when you feel that no one understands your situation, but Jesus knows and He understands. In light of that truth, 0ur response is revealed in the next verse,
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)
We are to come to the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive His mercy and His unmerited favor to help in our time of need. What burden is causing you to be weary? Don’t neglect the invitation to come to God and receive His offer of help. He’s waiting for you to come to Him in prayer and cast your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
