The right way can be difficult to discern at times. There are many ways that seem to be the right way; however, their path leads to destruction.  Solomon revealed this truth many years ago,

There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25)

The basic meaning of the word “right” literally means to be straight or level. Figuratively, this word was used to describe that which is right or pleasant. Most people don’t envision making a shipwreck of their lives, but they are facing unintended consequences if they continue on their current pathway. Here are a few of the reasons why people follow a way that seems right, but is harmful.

Some people may think they’re on the right way because they have sincere conviction, but they may be sincerely wrong. Jesus warned His disciples of the coming persecution from the religious leaders of His day,

They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. (John 16:2)

The Pharisees thought the right way was to kill Jesus, but they had an incorrect perspective of His true identity. Good intentions are never a justification for wrong doing.

Another way that people think is correct is having their own way – it’s their way or the highway. They are not open to advice from others as they demonstrate a prideful and independent spirit,

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. (Proverbs 12:15)

A frequent way that people think is correct is to yield to their feelings. A recurring theme in proverbs is a warning against laziness,

The way of the lazy is as a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway. (Proverbs 15:19)

Some people believe that if they have a desire, then they should gratify that feeling. Unfortunately, we can be masters at rationalization. The book of Proverbs provides numerous warnings to the naive not to fall for the seductive words of the adultress,

Her house is the way to Sheol, descending to the chambers of death. (Proverbs 7:27)

Solomon points out that gratifying your fleshly desires in this manner is the way of death. Jesus instructed us to take the narrow way in the Sermon on the Mount,

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. (Matthew 7:13)

People have a propensity to take the broad way since it seems to be the easy way, whereas the narrow way may be a difficult path. What are some ways that you can avoid a way that appears right, but is destructive?

Ask yourself, “What does the Bible say about the way that you’re contemplating?” You may also want to ask some spiritually mature individuals who are willing to speak truth into your life. Finally, you may need to earnestly pray about the way you’re considering. Remember that God is for you and He will guide you as you seek Him. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul. (Deuteronomy 4:29)
