Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
Haruki Murakami
Distance running can be more of mental workout than a physical workout. Although my body was ready for the race to be over, it was up to my mind to keep on going. I wasn’t able to devote as much training as I’d hoped for the Charleston half marathon and I was reminded of the words of Archilochus, “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” As I was nearing the end of the race, I was feeling the pain, but the pain was eclipsed by the joy that I’m still able to run.
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary. (Isaiah 40:31)
