A nation is born stoic, and dies epicurean.
Will Durant
Will Durant was a prolific historian and philosopher with an amazing understanding of history. He observed that the birth of a nation is characterized by a strong religious faith that gives people courage to bear pain and hardship. When a nation comes of age, suffering is replaced by pleasure and the people choose comfort over challenge. The book of Judges reveals that our commitment to God can fade away rather quickly:
All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel. (Judges 2:10)
