Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions — not outside.
Marcus Aurelius
Do you find it difficult to escape from anxiety? It’s freeing to know that we have the ability to choose our perceptions. Marcus’ reflection in Meditations reminds of the words of another Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, who stated, “It isn’t the events themselves that disturb people, but only their judgments about them.” Although the Apostle Paul was imprisoned in harsh circumstances, he chose to rejoice:
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)
