To err is human, to forgive is divine.
Alexander Pope

Alexander Pope revealed the challenge it can be to forgive another person. An aspect of being human is that we will err, but we need divine help to offer forgiveness. Forgiveness is not minimizing or denying the hurt that was done against us, but accurately defining the wrong and choosing to let go of the hurt. Thomas Szasz reminds us, “The foolish neither forgive nor forget. The naïve forgive and forget. The wise forgive but do not forget.”

It can be difficult to forgive those who have deeply hurt us. Life seems to be a constant journey in learning how to forgive others. The Apostle Paul instructed us that we are to forgive others as Christ has forgiven us – completely, unconditionally, and sacrificially. Let us forgive as we’ve been forgiven:

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32)
