These are times in which a genius would wish to live. It is not in the still calm of life, or in the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues.
Abigail Adams
As we look at the events around us we may become discouraged and wonder what’s going on. The first half of this year has ushered in a global pandemic, worldwide recession, and rioting in many cities. The Apostle Paul taught us that God is developing the character of those who have eyes to see him:
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)
