As I was driving to work this morning the sky was mostly cloudy with rays of sun shining through the clouds. As I was thinking about the 11th anniversary of September 11th, I thought how our lives may be cloudy at times but the sun is still shining. As you remember the tragedy of 9/11 don’t forget that God was, is, and will be on the throne. Reflect on the words of the Psalmist,
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah. (Psalm 46:1-3)
The Psalmist was facing challenging situations but he did not succumb to fear – he realized that God was his refuge and strength. The word “Selah” is most likely a musical notation that denotes a pause. Three times in this Psalm we see the term “Selah” as the author reflects on God rather than his troubles.
At the close of the Psalm he writes,
Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah. (Psalm 46:10-11)
The Hebrew word for “cease striving” conveys the idea of relaxing or letting go. As you look at the world around you may you focus on the greatness of God rather than the multitude of problems. God is in control and He is with His people. May you experience His comfort on this day of remembrance and reflection.
