Yesterday as I was reading Oswald Chamber’s classic “My Utmost for His Highest” he made an amazing statement, “The whole of the life after surrender is an aspiration for unbroken communion with God.” Is this really possible – can we experience unbroken communion with God?
When I look back at my failures and I realize my weaknesses then the promise of unbroken communion with God seems more of an idealistic dream than a realistic possibility – until I realize a very important truth. It’s not about my performance – it’s about His grace.
The apostle Paul recorded Jesus’ advice to Him, “And He (Jesus) has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). I am able to experience unbroken communion with God so long as I exhibit humility by realizing my absolute dependence upon God.
What causes me to lose communion with God? It happens whenever I exhibit the opposite of humility which is pride. Peter exhorts his readers, “You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE” (1 Peter 5:5).
The amazing truthis that God wants communion with you even more than you want communion with Him. So come to Him in humility and He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy!
