This morning I enjoyed a nice six mile run through the woods and around a lake in my neighborhood.  The sun was just coming up revealing the hues and texture of the stratocumulus clouds above me.  Off to my left a duck was quietly cutting a wake through the lake – what a beautiful picture of peace and tranquility.  After my run I took a quick half mile swim feeling refreshed and ready for the day.

I find that a good work out helps prepare me for the day.  I can stay alert and focused even in long meetings and my energy level stays high throughout the day.  I’m thankful for the good health God has given me but it’s not the most important aspect of my life.  The apostle Paul wrote, “For physical training is of some value“ but he didn’t stop there.  The verse goes on to say, “but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7).

As important as physical exercise is it is secondary to godliness.  We have a tendency to take good things and make them the most important thing but we need to remember that good is the enemy is best.  It’s important to take care of yourself physically but above all else maintain a healthy spiritual disposition.
