Our church creates space for men to experience God in a fresh way as they embark on a four-day adventure in the mountains. The men’s hike provides an opportunity to test oneself, build relationships, and deepen one’s relationship to God. When we leave our comfort zones we can learn how to grow in our dependence upon God. The physical challenges we face are a metaphor – we come to realize that the real battle is in the spiritual realm. The men’s hike enables us to discover the true source of our strength. (Do you see Bob Weir in the group photo?)

We divided into two teams; here are some highlights from our trip (a picture is worth a thousand words):

Home sweet home nestled in a grove of Mountain Laurel (thanks for letting me borrow your tent David).

Shining Rock is a huge formation of quartz (SiO2). Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in Earth’s crust behind feldspar. Here’s a view from the top in the early morning.

Sunrise from Flower Gap (This is one of our favorite campsites).

Here’s our team back at the base camp in a grove of Balsam trees.

Teaching God’s word on the mountain.

Enjoying the view from an overlook.

Here is the view from our tent (another one of my favorite campsites).

Sam Knob as viewed from Black Balsam. As David reminds us,

The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. (Psalm 19:1)
