Enchanted woodThe Enchanted Wood by Ruth Sanderson is a classic “Quest” motif in which the protagonist encounters a significant challenge that must be overcome to reach the goal.  Years ago I read this book to my children and I can still recall the principles and fascinating pictures that both children and adults can appreciate.

In summary, a kingdom is plagued by a drought that can only be alleviated by one who journeys to the heart of the Enchanted Wood.  The king’s older sons (one who is a great warrior and the other a skillful hunter) proceed with great confidence not thinking they need any assistance.  Their over confidence leads to their downfall and they are unsuccessful in their quest.  The youngest son is humble enough to accept the wisdom of an elderly lady who warns him, “Be true to the quest at any cost, stray from the path and you will be lost.”  Her advice is reminiscent of Solomon’s advice to us,

Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established.  Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.  (Proverbs 4:26-27)

During the holiday season may you have the opportunity to sit by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy a good book.  What is a favorite story you would recommend to others?
