Lunch MeetingThere is an African proverb that says, “If you want to travel fast, go alone.  If you want to travel far, go with others.”  For those of you with traveling with young children you know you don’t go anywhere fast – after a few trips to the bathroom and several false starts you finally leave (only to quickly return home to collect what you forgot).

As you enter the New Year, are you going alone or with others?  In our independent, western culture we find it easier to travel alone.  We often make plans (and resolutions) without consulting with others.  But that is not the best way – especially if you want to go far.  Solomon writing in Proverbs gives sage advice,

Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.  (Proverbs 11:14)

Do you have counselors in your life who can provide you with wise advice?  God created us as relational beings – we need one another.  All of us need people who can speak truth into our lives (if you doubt that statement then just take a look at some of people who audition for American Idol – they needed someone to tell them they can’t sing).

We need other people to give us direction, perspective, encouragement, and correction.  You must also realize your responsibility to provide wise counsel to others.  Peter T. Forsyth wisely observes, “You must live with people to know their problems, and live with God in order to solve them.”  As you journey into 2013 and beyond, develop a network of close friends who can provide you wise guidance.  Who are some trusted counselors in your life?
