Deep within our human spirit is the desire to experience meaning in our life.  We may look for meaning in many different places:  some through possessions, some through popularity, and some through pleasure.  Be encouraged that God also wants you to experience meaning and purpose in your life.

The woman at the well in John chapter four is picture of someone who was searching for meaning in her life.  Jesus makes an astonishing statement to the woman at the well, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”  She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?”  From her perspective she didn’t see how Jesus was able to provide her with water.  How often do we look at Jesus and underestimate His ability?

She knew that the well was deep but with the right type of bucket and a little more effort perhaps she could get the water.  We often believe that as well.  If we just have the right technique and with more effort we can get the living water.  The problem is the well is much deeper than we realize.  No amount of self-effort, self-discipline, or will power will enable you to get the living water.  Sure, you can do okay for a while by dint of effort, but when it gets really difficult you need a power greater than yourself. Blaise Pascal, the famous French mathematician and philosopher said it well, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus”

We can get some water in our own strength but it doesn’t last.  Don’t miss out on the living water that God has for you.  Are you experiencing the rivers of living water that Jesus can provide in your life?
