Life can seem overwhelming at times and peace of mind may seem elusive. So how do we experience peace in the midst of the storm? Many people try to find peace through external means – escapism, drugs, or entertainment. Francois de La Rochefoucauld however warns us, “If we have not peace within ourselves, it is in vain to seek it from outward sources.”

So how do we experience peace within ourselves? The prophet Isaiah lived in a time that was characterized by uncertainty and significant danger to his country. Isaiah fearlessly prophesied to his people, but he also delivered God’s perspective of hope in the midst of uncertainty,

The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

The word “peace” occurs over 300 times in our English Bible depending upon the translation that is used. The English word for “peace” does not capture the essence of the Hebrew concept of peace. The words “perfect peace” is the Hebrew word shalom (שָׁלוֹם) which is rich in meaning. It conveys the idea of completeness, soundness, safety, welfare, peace, quietness, tranquility, and contentment. Shalom is not simply the absence of war but it is the presence of peace. The presence of trouble in your life does not mean the absence of God. Perfect peace may seem to be an illusion in our fallen world but Jesus can make it a reality for you,

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27

The heartfelt cry among many people is “How can I find peace in a world that seems so chaotic?” You can experience peace as you invest time with God.  (See my blog post entitled Developing peace – overcoming anxiety for additional help in experiencing peace). The Psalmist reveals the relationship between His word and experiencing peace,

Those who love Your law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble. (Psalm 119:165)

May you experience God’s perfect peace as you faithfully follow Him!
