We face a number of fears as we go through life.  It’s been said that fear can represent the acronym:  false evidence appearing real.  There are however, a number of genuine fears we face.  This past weekend Jeanne and I took the grand-girls to Riverbanks Zoo and Abigail and Lily wanted to do the high ropes course.

This was Lily’s first time on the high ropes course but she was determined to experience all three levels.  There was one transit that was especially challenging three stories up that both girls were somewhat apprehensive about crossing.  Their sense of adventure and desire for accomplishment however, was greater than their fear of heights.  They realized that courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to act in spite of one’s fears.  After they made the crossing their sense of confidence and excitement was infectious.

Courage is similar to a muscle and when we exercise it then it becomes stronger.  Courage by definition implies that you’re doing something you’re afraid to do.  There can be no courage unless you are facing your fear.  Are you facing some challenges that are causing fear in your life?  Take a look at God’s encouragement to the Israelites as they were preparing to enter the promised land,

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.  (Deuteronomy 31:6)

What are some fears you’re facing?  May God’s word give you His courage to overcome your fears!
